What is BUMS?

Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) is an undergraduate medical degree program that focuses on traditional Unani treatments. It takes 5.5 years to complete, with 4.5 years of main course classes and a one-year internship.

The Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), which is a statutory body under the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (AYUSH), regulates the education and training of BUMS in India.

To be eligible for the program, students must have completed their 10+2 exams from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as their major subjects and at least 50% marks.

Admission to the course is granted based on entrance exam scores like NEET, and CPAT in some top colleges, and eligibility may vary depending on the college.

BUMS Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be at least 17 years old as of December 31 of the application year.

  • Candidates must have studied Urdu/Arab/Persi language at their secondary level.

  • Aspirants must have completed their high secondary education from a recognized board or institution.

  • They should have secured a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in their 10+2 level.

  • For reserved category candidates, a minimum of 40% aggregate marks is required.

  • It is mandatory to have studied English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics as core subjects.

  • Applicants must qualify for entrance exams like NEET UG and OJEE conducted at national and state levels to be eligible for admission to BUMS courses. 

 

BUMS Course Duration:

The duration of the Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) course in India is typically 5.5 years. This includes 4.5 years of academic study and 1 year of mandatory internship.

During the academic study period, students will learn about various types of Unani treatments such as exercises, surgery, diuresis, cupping, therapies, diaphoresis, Turkish baths, etc.

The internship year is spent in a hospital or healthcare facility, where students get hands-on experience in various aspects of Unani medicine. The internship year provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real-life situations.
